GLOBACOM NIGERIA LAUNCHES G-BAM Hi5ive PLAN

Globacom Nigeria, has launched a youth programme, G-BAM Hi5ive to the Nigerian telecommunication market.
The new product allows subscribers to call five special numbers at only five kobo per second and offers a unique proposition to Nigerian youths by making the immensely popular social networking site Facebook FREE.
To register a friend, the subscriber is required to dial *101*1*friend’s number#. It also offers subscribers several other attractive benefits including free airtime and free night calls.

Globacom’s Group Chief Operating Officer, Mohammed Jameel, unveiled the product at a press conference in Lagos.

Jameel explained that 250 students would be selected every quarter for USD 5,000 worth of scholarship. “This will help aspiring students to fulfill their academic ambitions, pursue their dreams and passion, and also take care of meritorious students and young people,” he added.

The GCOO said G-BAM Hi5ive is primarily a youth-centric package designed with the lifestyle of Nigerian youths in mind. “The package will enable them to connect with their passion points and help them strengthen relationships with their friends and loved ones,” he stated.

He explained that other benefits of the new product are categorized under G-BAM bonus for N500 free airtime once the SIM is activated and recharged, G-BAM social for FREE facebook browsing from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. everyday, G-BAM weekender for FREE weekend chatting, G-BAM Nites for FREE night calls. MTN NIGERIA TO ACQUIRE MULTILINKS' BACKBONE NETWORK

Fresh information has emerged that Nigeria’s dominant telecommunications operator, MTN is bidding for beleaguered CDMA operator, Multilinks’ backbone transmission network.
Analyst told "Business Day" that MTN was keen on maintaining market leadership in the data segment of the country’s highly competitive telecoms market.

As at March this year, official subscriber statistics from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) showed that MTN had 40.2 million subscribers, while Globacom had 19.9 million; Airtel had 16.1 million and Etisalat had 7.2 million, in the voice segment.

A senior executive at MTN told Business Day that the company ‘was unable to comment at this time’. Industry players are all agreed however, that market focus is shifting from voice to internet and data services, which are of high value for business, education, social and entertainment purposes.

Industry watchers also maintain that MTN’s purported bid for Multilink’s fibre transmission backbone is particularly an ardent struggle for the data and internet services market, as well as for the bulk (carriers-carrier) market.

According to "Business Day" source, Multilink’s ‘crown jewel’ is its robust terrestrial fibre optic network connecting 21 of Nigeria’s 36 states, including the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja with an estimated construction cost of over $150 million.

On the other hand, MTN owns the largest transmission network in Nigeria and there are concerns amongst industry stakeholders that the acquisition of Multilinks backbone, will mean that the telecoms company will own substantially more than 50 percent of long distance transmission networks in Nigeria.Industry watchers say the limited availability and exorbitant price of long distance national transmission capacity needed to move available bandwidth capacity emanating from the underwater cables on the country’s coastline, is the fundamental drawback to access to efficient and reasonably priced broadband internet services.

It has been discovered that the price of moving internet capacity from Lagos to Abuja is much higher than the cost of moving capacity from Lagos to London, due to the dearth of transmission backbone network. According to analysts, the development of the broadband market in Nigeria and the availability of internet access to as wide a population as possible, at a lower cost was largely dependent on the reduction of transmission costs.

There is concern among telecoms officials about a concentration of market power and the negative impact this might have on competition and pricing.

GLOBACOM TO LAUNCH ITS OPERATION IN GHANA ON 17 NOVEMBER 2011 OFFICIALLY

Globacom, a Nigeria-based telecom company with operations in Gambia, Senegal, Nigeria, Benin and Cote d’Ivoire, has announced it will officially launch its operation in Ghana on 17 November 2011, three years after first receiving a license to offer services.

The company’s chief operating officer George Andah has reportedly released a statement saying the Glo Mobile unit will be supported by GLO 1, the high capacity submarine cable network commissioned in Ghana in 2009.

‘The cable will guarantee access to ultra-fast and reliable internet connectivity and will be the driving force for the business community not only in Ghana, but also in West Africa,’ the statement read. It is understood Glo Mobile is looking to develop an extensive network, with Andah claiming the launch will act as a platform to boost Ghana’s economy.

‘It will also provide the platform for robust application and customized conferencing, tel-medicine, distance learning and customized services such as data centres and wireless virtual network,’ he said. The new network will hopefully support extensive 3G coverage as well as providing a range of high quality and reliable voice and data services at very competitive rates.

Globacom’s entry to the Ghanaian market has been beset with delays. Indeed, in August this year the government issued a warning to the would-be start-up to launch commercial services in the country by 15 September, or face sanctions. The ultimatum was delivered by the Minister of Communications, Haruna Iddrisu, who was quoted as saying of the newcomer’s heel-dragging: ‘it is about time we take the company on because they have the Ghanaian market space waiting for too long.’

For its part, the Nigerian-owned operation has long argued that it has faced obstacles to its entry into the market. In May 2010 Globacom threatened to exit Ghana altogether in the face of what it termed ‘interests’ seemingly hell-bent on sabotaging its nationwide launch plans.

At the time an unnamed source claimed that since Glo Mobile was awarded its GSM frequencies by the National Communications Authority (NCA), it has faced obstacles in terms of seeking approval for the swift deployment of its base stations, an encroachment on the frequencies it was awarded by the NCA and the repeated vandalism of its advertising billboards.

In August the government moved to reassure Globacom that it was ‘free to do business in Ghana’, but the statement appears to have done little to resolve the stalemate.

OVER 5 MILLION AIRTEL NIGERIA SUBSCRIBERS CUT OFF THE NETWORK

Following a dispute between Airtel staff and the company, over five million Airtel Nigeria subscribers were without mobile phone coverage last week, reports Vanguard.

According to the newspaper,

“Airtel said some people claiming to be NLC members shut down 15 showrooms this week (last week) and attacked its switchboard in the capital, Abuja, cutting off 5 million customers from its network across the north of Africa’s most populous nation.”

You may recall that last week, Airtel Nigeria was accused of laying off thousands of its employees, which the company denied, saying the workers were employed by other companies it contracted.

In a statement issued by the company last Thursday, it said:

“Airtel did not sack any employee. The employees being referred to, work for Tech Mahindra and Spanco, who provide us Call Centre services. The employees in question were contracted through two employment agencies, namely HR Indexx and CCSNL, whose contracts with Tech Mahindra and Spanco expired on September 30, 2011.”

The company further noted that Spanco and Tech Mahindra were working on plans to recruit new employees, which would include some of the contracts that have recently expired.

MTN NIGERIA EXTENDS ALL ACTIVE BIS SUBSCRIPTIONS WITH 4 DAYS

Following last week’s global BlackBerry service disruption, telecommunications giant, MTN Nigeria will compensate all customers on the service with a four-day extension on their current subscription.

The compensation package is coming in spite of the fact that the outage was caused by a server failure from Research in Motion (RIM), the global provider of BlackBerry services.

According to Akinwale Goodluck, MTN’s Corporate Services Executive, the compensation package is for the inconveniences MTN customers experienced during the downtime.

“MTN is a customer focused organization and we are aware of the inconvenience our customers suffered during the down time. That is why, in spite of the fact that the three-day BlackBerry disruption was caused by an incident outside our control, we will extend by 4 days, the subscription of affected pre-paid and post-paid BlackBerry subscribers” he said.’

During the outage, messaging and web browsing on BlackBerry were halted across many parts of the world.

By launching the apps competition, MTN said it was opening its innovative scope to the wider developer community in a bid to speed up the adoption of data-enabled technologies - especially those that featured digital content developed with the African and Middle Eastern user in mind.

The more user-friendly and relevant the app, the more differentiated it will be, thus increasing the likelihood of its adoption on a wide scale in two vast markets that are hungry for local solutions - not least of which is digital content with an African and Middle Eastern flair, said Christian de Faria, MTN Group chief commercial officer.

MTN said its App Store was currently in the works. The group said that the launch date would be " much sooner" than the next six months, with an initial focus on South Africa, Nigeria and other markets where the group already had a strong presence.
MTN said it wanted to take advantage of an expected explosion in the applications market by opening an applications store "in the near future", offering a "wide range of apps in multiple territories".

"Our vision for the MTN App Store is to have an apps platform whose vast majority of applications is, by and large, created by the developer community.
This way, we hope to offer MTN App Store subscribers unmatched user experience, with exciting and varied content that cuts across all facets of life," said De Faria.
He explained that there is a huge apps developer community out there, but many of their inventions did not get wide adoption.
The MTN apps competition will therefore serve to strengthen the apps ecosystem as well as provide a much-needed distribution channel to 150 million MTN subscribers for the regions' developer community, De Faria said.

The apps competition would run for five months, and would focus initially on the Android OS. All apps should be built in English and should be relevant for the African and Middle East markets, MTN said.

MTN NIGERIA PARTNERs WITH OANDO TO BOOST CUSTOMER SERVICEs

Leading telecommunication company in Nigeria, MTN Nigeria last week unveiled its point service centres at Danso filling station, secretariat road, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos. As part of its ongoing effort to bring services closer to subscribers.
The service centre, based on a partnership between MTN and Oando Marketing PLC tagged "MTN Connect Point" is the first of 200 service outlets that the two partners is aiming to jointly use in improving customers experience through the provision of "Walk In Service Everywhere" (W.I.S.E) kiosks at selected Oando service stations nationwide.
At the W.I.S.E kiosks, Oando customers who are MTN subscribers can now enjoy a complete customer care service like sim swaps, bill payments, sim registration, query resolutions, sale of airtime and other bouquet services.
In the first phase of the project, MTN will deploy 100 W.I.S.E kiosks to select service stations in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt while further pan Nigeria spread will be covered in phase 2.
The MTN Connect Point concept is a service outlet which forms a strategic part of MTN comprehensive customer outreach programme, known as 'Walk-In Service Everywhere" W.I.S.E, with the primary aim of improving its customer experience by bringing service literally to their door.
Unveiling the package, Customer Relations Executive, MTN, Mr Akin Braithwaite, said that the service centre is a new concept in customer support and satisfaction in the telecommunication industry and another demonstration of MTN's commitment to bring services closer to its numerous customers.
The Connect Point consists of a branded kiosk operated by a Connect Partner, while the cost of the kiosk is borne by MTN. Each Connect Point is fully equipped with modern technology and is manned by two personnel who will carry out a bouquet of services, including SIM swaps, bill payment, query resolution, SIM registration, assistance to customers with product or service activation or set up, and customer enlightenment, among other services.
On the choice of Oando as partner, MTN Customer Relation Executive; Mr. Akin Braithwaite said that the national spread and the quality of its premises informed its choice by MTN. In addition to the utilization of OANDO premises, the MTN CRE disclosed that the Connect points will also spring up in many other open spaces including university communities nationwide.
"In the next few months, we will roll out MTN Connect Points in 200 strategic locations across the country. Under an agreement with OANDO, we will deploy 100 of these service outlets on the premises of OANDO filling stations spread across the country. Ten of these are already up and running, and the Connect Point we are unveiling today is one of them," he stated.

NCC WARNs AGAINST PRE-REGISTERED SIMCARDs

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), yesterday in Abuja, issued stern warning to all telecom operators, SIM card vendors, retailers and the general public over the sale or use of pre-registered new SIM cards in the network.
In a statement in Abuja, NCC's head, Media and Public Relations, Reuben Muoka, said the act of selling pre-registered new SIM cards to the members of the public, by vendors or retailers, and use of such cards by anybody whatsoever, contravenes the regulation on registration of phone subscribers.
He said such person or persons shall be liable on conviction to a fine, or imprisonment, or both, in line with the Nigerian Communications Act 2003 .
He said the commission will also hold network service providers liable when such cards are found to be in use as they are expected to ensure that new SIM cards are not pre-registered before they are sold to members of the public through their various channels.
Mr Muoka said the commission's prescription in the process of the current on-going SIM card registration exercise in the country, presupposes that all newly purchased SIM cards can only receive calls while the buyers are expected to go to their particular network provider of that SIM to register his or her own SIM Card before such numbers can be used to make calls.
He said those found to be involved in this illegality will face arrest, detention, investigation, prosecution and sanction in line with the provisions of the Communications Act.
He also warned the public to desist from buying pre-registered SIM cards as they will also be liable if such line is in any way connected to any crime or misuse.
"Members of the public are advised to go to their operators to register their new SIM cards. Do not be tempted to buy pre-registered new SIM cards when the registration is free", he said.

MTN NIGERIA TO INTRODUCE MOBILE MONEY

In July, MTN Nigeria announced it will launch a mobile money services throughout the country in August 2011 , with the aim of bringing its more than 40 million users to the new platform.
According to MTN, mobile money will harness and document the identities, resources and financial transactions of hoarders and unbanked Nigerians and bring them into the formal economy.
The goal of mobile money is to help create a cashless society and reduce the cost and dangers associated with traditional transactions in the country.
Most Nigerian telecom analysts are positive about the latest mobile money developments in the country. Currently less than one in five Nigerians have bank accounts and the country’s 24 commercial banks have a network of less than 4000 branches nationwide.
Currently 90 million of Nigeria’s 140 million citizens have active mobile phones. “Mobile money is a facility that enables people to use their cell phones and other hand-held devices as electronic purses from which to effect financial transactions, including receiving and making payments,” MTN Nigeria stated.
Currently, Kenya has the most effective mobile money service in Africa.

AIRTEL NIGERIA LAUNCHES 2SIM OFFER(AirtelSimPartner)

Leading telecommunications services provider, Airtel Nigeria, has announced the introduction of an innovative two identical Subscriber Identity Module cards.

The Airtel 2SIM offer comes with two matching numbers in one single starter pack and gives Airtel customers on the package access to several benefits including one kobo per second midnight call rate to a SIM partner, 10 Kobo per second call rate to SIM partner and 120 free monthly SMS.

The new offering is currently available to pre-paid customers, according to a statement made available to The Punch correspondent on Thursday by the Public Relations Manager of the telecoms firm, Mr. Emmanuel Otokhine.

Other benefits of the offer to customers would include one month subscription-free Caller Ring Back Tone and free delivery of Breaking News and ringtone from Airtel live to owners’ phone, the statement said.

Furthermore, the customers would have free access to Facebook and push email (gmail, hotmail, Yahoo, etc). These offers would be available on a 30-day promotional basis, Otokhine added.

Existing Airtel customers on Airtel 2Good Xtra and Airtel Big Family packages can also enjoy the benefits of Airtel 2SIM offerings by registering their Airtel SIM partner numbers.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Airtel Nigeria, Mr. Rajan Swaroop, expressed delight at the new offer.

He said, “We are very pleased to announce that this new offer is currently available for our prepaid customers. At Airtel Nigeria, we always strive for leadership in everything we do, delivering world-class and innovative services.

“The double-SIM pack is a truly innovative and very relevant offer that is ideal for family, friends and associates as well as gives our customers access to a number of additional services.”

GLO NIGERIA REWARDS 3G and BLACKBERRY DEALERs WITH CARs & OTHER PRIZEs

AGAIN, National Telecommunications Operator, Globacom, has rewarded another segment of its trade partners whose role are strategic to the business success of the company.

In the last few months, Globacom had hosted various segments of its trade partners. These events were held to recognize the roles of the business partners in positioning Globacom as a telecommunications company of choice in the Nigerian environment.

AIRTEL NIGERIA LAUNCHES BIG FAMILY PACKAGE FOR SUBSCRIBERS,A TARRIF PLAN WHICH OFFERS 15K PER SECOND

Airtel Nigeria has introduced a new tariff plan, which allows customers to make on-net calls at 15k per second and off-net calls at 30k a second.

The company said in a statement on Friday that it found it imperative to bring the new tariff package into the market, five months after it inaugurated its 2Good plan.

According to the statement, the new tariff plan offers very affordable call rates and sets a new benchmark for value offering in the industry.

The Chief Executive Officer, Airtel Nigeria, Mr. Rajan Swaroop, said the new tariff offer, named the Airtel Big Family package, allowed existing and new customers to make on-net calls at 15k per second and off-net calls at 30k per second, after the first minute call of the day at 60k per second, upon migration to the plan.

He said the new tariff had additional benefits, including 20 bonus Short Message Service monthly after the first recharge of the month of more than N100.

The free SMS applied to numbers within the Airtel network, he added.

Another added value of the new tariff offer, according to him, is attractive SMS rates.

He said “The wallet-friendly SMS tariff plan includes N5 for Airtel to Airtel SMS, N10 for SMS to other networks and N15 for SMS to international locations.

“With the Airtel Big Family package, we have given our customers the benefits of communicating freely with all their families, relations and friends, who are on Airtel, at affordable rates.”

Customers on the plan, according to the Airtel boss, will enjoy the benefit of calling international destinations such as the United Kingdom (landlines), United States of America, Canada, China and India at 20k a second.

The 20k a second call rate applied after paying 60k a second for the first minute of the day for calls to the international destinations, he explained.

Calls to all other international destinations are billed at the applicable tariff rate.

Since the launch of the Airtel brand five months ago, the company has introduced into the Nigerian market tariff packages such as 2Good and 2Good Xtra.

Each of these plans has enabled Airtel’s customers to enjoy the freedom to talk and express themselves freely.

These have been complemented by the introduction of Airtel’s N50 Wazobia recharge, a lower denomination recharge voucher, which has in no small way, facilitated the inclusion of all members of the society in telecoms offering in the country.

Swaroop added that there was no restriction to the number of Airtel lines that a customer on the plan could call at the prevailing rate of 15k a second.

Also, customers could call any Airtel line as many as times as possible at the stated rates any day, he noted.

The offer is also valid for customers who have dormant Airtel lines and want to reactivate their lines and return to the network.

What is MTN Notify Me?

With MTN Notify Me, you will get to know through SMS message when a phone number you could not reach becomes available on the network. You can then call the number being sure that it is now available.

How do I get the service?

There are two options available to you when subscribing for these services. These are:

  • MTN Who Called.
  • MTN Who Called with Notify Me.

You can activate the Who Called Service free of charge by simply sending the key word of your desired option by SMS to 100. For Example:

  • To activate MTN Who Called, text SET 01 to 100.Once this is done, you will receive the message: Y’ello! 803xxxxxxx request to activate Who Called Service was successful. Thank you.
  • To activate MTN Who Called with Notify Me, text SET 02 to 100. Once done you will receive the message: Y’ello! 803xxxxxxx request to activate Who Called with Notify Me service was successful. Thank you.

How do I check if I already have the service on my phone?

  • To check your status, text the word STATUS to 100. You will receive the following message: Y’ello! 803xxxxxxx has an active Who Called service. Thank you.

How do I cancel the service?

MTN tasks NCC, NITDA over broadband penetration

Leading digital mobile operator, MTN Nigeria Communications Limited, has urged industry regulatory and development agencies to take steps that will lead to greater penetration of broadband services, especially in the rural parts of the country.

The Corporate Services Executive at MTN, Mr. Akinwale Goodluck, who spoke at a capacity building workshop in Abuja on Thursday, said the Nigerian Communications Commission and the National Information Technology Development Agency needed to do more to promote broadband penetration.

According to him, NCC and NITDA need to subsidise the roll-out of broadband services in the rural areas from the funds operators contributed for the development of underserved parts of the country domiciled in the government agencies.

He listed other areas, which needed government’s intervention for the penetration of broadband services to include liberal policy on spectrum management as well as a clear road map for serving underserved communities.

The MTN topnotch said the two government agencies as well as the National Broadcasting Commission needed to collaborate more in solving the problems of the industry rather than work in isolation.

Goodluck said, “It is critical to develop a National Broadband Policy, which articulates a road map and strategy for broadband penetration and service delivery. Lack of broadband policy means there is no clear road map for spectrum planning, particularly with the harvesting of the digital dividend spectrums.

“Broadband penetration is meaningless without appropriate regulatory environment which enables the delivery of converged services. It is time to pursue institutional and regulatory convergence. Government also needs to articulate policies and strategies for driving broadband usage through eGovernance, eCommerce and eEconomy services.”

He added, “Well-known challenge with power and security means that operators also have to build and manage power, diesel distribution and security networks, in addition to core telecoms networks. This dissipates energy and resources.

“There is urgent need to address imposition of unstructured fees and charges by the various labels of government and service interruptions arising from collection attempts.”

Goodluck listed the benefits of broadband penetration in rural areas as offering a remote interaction with specialists, an instant and cheaper access to efficient health information as well as a platform for delivering primary healthcare.

Farmers could use broadband Internet access for market information, purchase of equipment, seedlings and other inputs and also to gain access to weather forecasts and other important information, he added.

He said achieving the potential required a comprehensive policy framework, effective private public participation for infrastructure development and service delivery as well as a concerted effort to address service dependencies militating against the achievement of broadband objectives.
